Woman Dies After Safety Harbor Shooting; Christopher "Dodge" Smith Now Charged With Murder
Jessica Antolini, 30, died two days after deputies say her boyfriend shot her and ran her over near Harbor Bar on Main Street. His charge is now first-degree murder. Here is what we know.
Jessica Antolini, the 30-year-old woman shot and run over near Harbor Bar on Main Street in Safety Harbor on Tuesday night, has died. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says she was pronounced dead at 9:14 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, from the injuries she suffered on Oct. 13.
Her boyfriend, Christopher "Dodge" Smith, 40, of Safety Harbor, now faces a charge of first-degree murder. The sheriff's office upgraded the charge from attempted first-degree murder after her death. He is also charged with child abuse and is being held without bond in the Pinellas County Jail.
Smith has been charged, not convicted. An arrest is an accusation, and he is presumed innocent unless and until the state proves its case in court.
Our thoughts are with Jessica Antolini's family and friends. Below is everything the sheriff's office, the arrest papers as reported, the bar's owner and Tampa Bay news outlets have said so far, and where those accounts disagree.
Key takeaways
- She has died: Jessica Antolini, 30, was pronounced dead at 9:14 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, according to an Oct. 16 update from the sheriff's office.
- The charges: First-degree murder, upgraded from attempted first-degree murder, and child abuse. Under Florida law, first-degree murder is a capital felony.
- What deputies say happened: Smith and Antolini argued near Harbor Bar, 840 Main St., at about 8:45 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Deputies say he shot her, then ran her over as he drove away with his 5-year-old daughter and the family dog in the vehicle.
- The arrest papers: According to WFLA, the arrest affidavits say his daughter saw the argument, and that Smith later called his mother and said he "messed up" and "shot Jess."
- The child: His daughter and the dog were found unhurt in the vehicle and were reunited with family members, the sheriff's office says.
- The bar: Harbor Bar's owner says the shooting did not happen at the bar, in the street or on the sidewalk out front, and that Smith was not served there that evening.
- Public safety: The sheriff's office described it as a domestic-related, isolated incident, according to FOX 13.
Update: Jessica Antolini has died
In an update to its news release dated Oct. 16, the sheriff's office said: "On October 15, 2026, at 9:14 p.m., Jessica Antolini was pronounced deceased as a result of the injuries she sustained on October 13, 2026."
"Following Antolini's death, the charge of Attempted Murder in the First Degree against Christopher 'Dodge' Smith has been upgraded to First Degree Murder," the update states. FOX 13, Tampa Bay 28, the Tampa Free Press and IONTB reported the same on Friday morning.
Prosecutors had said at Smith's first court appearance on Wednesday that the charge could be upgraded if she died, WFLA and 10 Tampa Bay reported.
What happened, according to the sheriff's office
Deputies were dispatched to Harbor Bar at 840 Main St. at about 9 p.m. on Oct. 13 for a reported shooting, according to the sheriff's office news release (No. 26-087). Investigators determined that the shooting happened at the southwest corner of 9th Avenue South and Main Street, just west of the bar.
According to detectives, Smith walked into Harbor Bar at about 8:45 p.m. and left his 5-year-old daughter and the family dog in the parking lot. He later came out of the bar with Antolini, and witnesses saw the two arguing outside, the release states.
The sheriff's office says Smith shot Antolini during that argument, then left in his vehicle with his daughter and the dog, and ran Antolini over as he drove away.
Several witnesses called 911 to report the shooting and described Smith's vehicle, according to detectives. Deputies found the vehicle a short time later and took Smith into custody. IONTB reports that the stop was in the Tarpon Woods area near Valemoor Drive and Ridgemoor Boulevard, in East Lake near Palm Harbor, and that Smith surrendered without further incident.
Earlier that evening, the Safety Harbor American Legion told WFLA that Smith and Antolini had been at the Legion until about 7:45 p.m.
What the arrest papers say
WFLA reviewed the Pinellas County arrest affidavits and reported these details on Thursday. They are the accusations in the arrest papers, as the station described them. They have not been tested in court.
- Smith arrived at Harbor Bar with his 5-year-old daughter looking for Antolini. He left his daughter in the parking lot and went inside to find her.
- After he found her, the two argued in the parking lot, and his daughter saw the argument.
- Smith walked to his vehicle and Antolini followed. He then took out a gun and shot her in the head.
- He ran over her with his vehicle and drove off with his daughter.
- Witnesses who know Smith told deputies that when he arrived at the bar he was acting strangely, and walked around the bar as if he was "possessed."
- After the shooting, Smith called his mother and said he was bringing his daughter to her because he "messed up" and "shot Jess."
IONTB also reported the call to his mother. Palm Harbor Happenings has not seen the affidavits ourselves.

Who is charged, and with what
Smith, 40, of Safety Harbor, is charged with first-degree murder and child abuse, according to the sheriff's office. News reports also refer to him as Christopher Dodge Smith.
Under Florida law, first-degree murder is a capital felony, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 (s. 782.04(1), Florida Statutes). The sheriff's office has not said what conduct the child abuse charge is based on.
These are arrest charges. The Office of the State Attorney for the Sixth Judicial Circuit decides what formal charges to file, and those can differ from the arrest charges.
The arrest on camera
The sheriff's office released dash camera and body camera video of the arrest on Wednesday. According to WFLA, the dash camera video shows deputies following Smith until he stops his car and steps out with his hands raised. As deputies order him to the ground, he tells them, "My daughter's in there," WFLA reported.
Asked where the gun was, Smith told deputies he did not know and that it was probably somewhere in the car, according to WFLA and 10 Tampa Bay. The video then shows deputies helping the crying girl and her dog out of the back seat and comforting her, the stations reported.
In court: no bond, no contact
Smith appeared by video from the jail for his first appearance on Wednesday afternoon, when the charge was still attempted murder, 10 Tampa Bay reported. Prosecutors asked that he be barred from contact with his daughter. The judge ordered no contact with the child and ordered him held without bond, the station reported.
According to 10 Tampa Bay, Smith said very little at the hearing, other than that he had not been able to make a phone call and would like a public defender. The Tampa Free Press reported on Friday that he remains held at the Pinellas County Jail.
What comes next
The next formal step is a charging decision by the State Attorney's Office. For someone held in jail, Florida's court rules generally give prosecutors about 30 days from the arrest to file formal charges (Fla. R. Crim. P. 3.134). For an arrest on Oct. 13, that would be around mid-November.
We have not seen an arraignment date in public reports yet. We will update this story when one is set.
Jessica Antolini
The sheriff's office identified her as Jessica Antolini, 30, and described her as Smith's girlfriend. She was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries on Tuesday night and stayed in critical condition until she died on Thursday night.
We have not found an obituary, a memorial fund or plans for a vigil. If her family shares any of these, we will add them here.
Harbor Bar's owner speaks
Harbor Bar sits at 840 Main St. in downtown Safety Harbor, south of Palm Harbor. A 2014 Tampa Bay Times review described it as one of a handful of bars, restaurants and taprooms on Main Street.
The morning after the shooting, owner Johnny Zemzicki posted a statement on the bar's Facebook page to answer questions from the night before. He said he could not say much because the investigation is ongoing. These are his words:
"The incident last night is tragic and our condolences go out to the friends and family of the victim."
"It did not happen at Harbor Bar, in the street, or on the sidewalk out front."
"The shooter was not served at Harbor Bar this evening."
"The crime scene tape was around the property because the police believe a small piece of evidence ended up in our lot and had to search for it."
"We openly submitted all video we had to the police without hesitation."
"We will always strive to keep a safe and neighborhood bar."
He also wrote that the police call "was not to the 800 block of Main St," and that early news reports placing the shooting at the bar were wrong. 10 Tampa Bay separately reported that the owner gave video of the incident to investigators.
Some people online called this "the second shooting there." The owner said that earlier incident happened before the bar was his, at a business with different owners and a different name.
The sheriff's office places the shooting at the southwest corner of 9th Avenue South and Main Street, just west of the bar.
Some Safety Harbor residents told WFLA they were shocked. "Such a tight-knit golf cart community. It's so shocking that something this tragic happened here," Quentin Mantilla told the station.
Where the reports disagree
- Exactly where. The sheriff's release says deputies were dispatched to Harbor Bar at 840 Main St. and that the shooting happened at the southwest corner of 9th Avenue South and Main Street, just west of the bar. WFLA's account of the arrest papers places the argument "in the parking lot" without naming whose lot. The bar's owner says it did not happen at the bar, in the street or on the sidewalk out front, and that the police call was not to the 800 block. First reports on Tuesday night described a shooting at Harbor Bar.
- The day. The sheriff's office gives the date as Tuesday, Oct. 13. One early report described it as Monday night, and another gave a later date.
- Where the child was. The sheriff's office says the daughter and dog were left "in the parking lot." Some TV reports said they were left inside the vehicle. The accounts agree that both were in the vehicle when Smith was stopped, and both were safe.
- How the stop ended. 10 Tampa Bay reported that deputies disabled his car. WFLA, describing the dash camera video, and IONTB reported that he stopped and surrendered.
- When she was run over. The sheriff's office says it happened as Smith drove away from the scene. One report described it as happening while he was fleeing law enforcement. The sheriff's release does not say deputies were there at that point.
What we don't know yet
- What led to the argument. The sheriff's office has not given a motive, and we will not guess at one.
- What specific conduct the child abuse charge is based on.
- Whether deputies recovered the gun, and whose gun it was.
- What formal charges the State Attorney will file, and when Smith's arraignment is.
- Who will represent Smith. He asked for a public defender at his first appearance, according to 10 Tampa Bay.
- Funeral or memorial plans for Jessica Antolini.
